Please join us for the opening reception of Among The Tides, a solo exhibition by Elizabeth Ellenwood on marine debris and the importance of ocean conservation.
Ellenwood is a current graduate student in the School of Fine Arts at the University of Connecticut. She uses her knowledge in photography to visually explore and bring attention to critical environmental issues. Both reverent and timely, Among the Tides makes visible the debris polluting local waterways, and challenges us to act to help our oceans.
Artwork displayed in this exhibition was graciously funded by Connecticut Sea Grant, the Connecticut Department of Economic and Community Development’s Office of the Arts, and the Zachs Award from the University.

The Hygienic XLI Art Exhibition will open on Saturday January 25, 2020 at the Hygienic Art Galleries in downtown New London Connecticut at 7pm. Modeled after the Salon des Independants held in Paris since 1884, New London’s outsider art event is open to all artists; no judge, no jury, no fees, and no censorship.
The Salon des Independants movement was created by French Impressionists who were not accepted into the established Salon in the late 19th century. In an effort to protest the rigid art establishment, these artists exhibited their work in cafes in the seamy sections of Paris. This revolutionary movement included such notables as Matisse, Munch, Rousseau, Cezanne and Modigliani among others. The intent of the artists (and Hygienic Art) was to create an artistic event without jury or reward so that all forms of visual art expression and trends in the art of the moment would have a chance to be presented for public consideration without restriction.
In that spirit all artists are welcomed to submit one piece of artwork for the exhibition. Sign-in and hanging begins on Saturday, January 25 at 8am until 6pm. The exhibition opens to the public at 7pm that night. The show runs through Saturday, February 8.
The exhibition is well known for its diverse original art ranging from the sublime to the outrageous. Over its 40 year history, the annual art extravaganza has grown from an anti establishment visual art show to a multi-media arts festival.
Join us for this exciting show featuring the work of young art students from throughout the region. There will be music, arts & crafts, storytelling, hula hooping and more!
